CONVERSION OF PIO CARDS INTO OCI CARDS

LAST DATE : 31ST DECEMBER 2017

PIO community / PIO cardholders who are travelling to India on the strength of their PIO cards (handwritten) after ICAO’s rules/guidelines (with respect to travel with machine readable travel documents) come into effect from October/November, 2018 will be refused entry at the Indian immigration counters and sent back.

The PIO community / PIO cardholders are requested to convert their PIO card to OCI card. After the expiry of the current deadline of December 31, 2017, will attract a fee of USD $ 275 which is same as charged for issuance of fresh OCI card.

Person of Indian Origin Card (PIO Card) scheme for foreigners of Indian origin holding foreign passports was introduced by the Government of India on 31 March 1999. This scheme has now been withdrawn vide Gazette Notification No.25024/9/2014-F.I dated 9.1.2015. All PIO Cards issued till 9.1.2015 are deemed to be OCI card vide Gazette Notification No.26011/01/2014-IC.I dated 9.1.2015

External Affairs Minister has announced that the conversion of Person of Indian Origin Card (PIO) Card into Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) Card will be done free-of-charge (gratis) for applications submitted until December 31, 2016.
